Many people know the power of prayer and yet most struggle to have a consistent prayer life. They desire more than anything, to overcome spiritual weakness and have a prayer life that can change their life. To their peril, they stumble and fail to develop a consistent prayer life.

I have learnt that maintaining a consistent prayer life is useful in deepening our relationship with God. However, in our ever-changing world, where distractions arise and schedules shift, there are lots of obstacles to a consistent prayer life. Jesus knew what it was like to have many things to do and a lot of demands on Him, yet He found time to pray; it was the very foundation of His ministry (Mark 6:30–46). The Lord knows your challenges and will give you grace because He is good (Hebrews 4:14–16).
Tips on how to develop a consistent prayer life include:
Schedule It: Make prayer a priority in your life. Carve out time in your schedule – write it on your calendar and set it as a priority appointment. Create a recurring event in your calendar. If you treat prayer like an important meeting or appointment (which it is) then you’ll be much more likely to keep it. You won’t keep it perfectly all the time, but you will pray much more if it’s on your calendar.
Find a private place where you can be alone with God (undistracted). This is what Jesus met by the prayer closet. He said it is the “secret place” before Father who “sees in secret.”
Mat 6:5-7 “When you pray, don’t be like hypocrites. They like to stand in synagogues and on street corners to pray so that everyone can see them. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward. (6) When you pray, go to your room and close the door. Pray privately to your Father who is with you. Your Father sees what you do in private. He will reward you.
Luke 5:16 But Jesus would often go away to places where he could be alone for prayer.
Make a Prayer List: A list helps us keep steady in praying for the specific people, nations, or issues that God has placed on our hearts. While the Spirit can move at any time, a list will help focus our prayers and make it easier to get started—and stay consistent—while we wait for the answer to come.
Be consistent: Stick with it. Like going to the gym, the “muscles” of prayer don’t develop overnight. Every new habit takes time to develop, so be disciplined and “don’t despise the day of small beginnings” (Zechariah 4:10). If it would help you to stay more consistent in prayer, why not ask a peer or more mature believer to keep you accountable to your schedule? They may have other ideas to help you grow in prayer.
The biggest thing to help develop a consistent prayer life is to just do it. Prayer is not just a good intention or concept. Prayer is a practice. The only way to develop a consistent prayer life is to consistently pray.
- Victories are won on your knees and the battles you are facing will be fought and won on your knees.
- Keep the conversation open with God and allow him to lead you back.
Let us put these things into practice and watch our prayer lives become more consistent.
